What Is Beauty?

What Is Beauty?

“What is beauty?” This question was asked to me by a dear friend who works closely with the beauty industry some time ago now. At first, this seems like a fairly easy question to answer, but if you sit with it for a while, the layers and complexity of the question begin to unfold. I chose to answer the question from the perspective of my profession (Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine) and largely, way of life.

We spend a lot of time in our lives working, and for many of us, our work does not fall into the “beauty” category. There are aspects and duties of an acupuncturist that are certainly not glamorous; a lot of discussion of bodily functions, cleaning, laundry, and paperwork. Regardless of these things, every day I feel fortunate to have found a career that feels like a fascinating lifestyle and a tremendous gift is that I get to witness the beauty of many magnificent sentient beings.

In my acupuncture practice, people come to me to help guide them on their journey to improved health and overall balance. I find this process of admitting we need help, seeking out that help, and then trusting another person (a stranger at first in most cases!) to work with us to create mind-body balance and free flowing energy throughout. This very first step of showing up in the treatment room and being there for ourselves is stunning. A person may come in broken; body damaged, spirit low, stress high, and at the end of their rope. This person may feel anything but beautiful, but to me they are exquisite because they are raw, natural, and vulnerable. I have just been invited into this person’s quest for betterment, and I am honoured to be a part of it and excited at the anticipation of their evolution and growth.

The journey to wellbeing isn’t always graceful, but it is beautiful in its own way as it unfolds, and bends, and takes root. It is a lifetime of maintenance and constant refinement, but when we make that realization that we are worth every single effort that we put forth, life opens up in a brand new amazing way.

One aspect of beauty I see with my clients is when we can laugh together and they start to experience emotions on a deeper level…sometimes feeling emotions they have never felt! Their pain disappears, the weight on their shoulders lifts, they smile easily, we talk about their children or dog or holidays, we make connections from their past to how they feel today, some cry, some squirm, some yelp, but then we giggle and it’s breathtakingly beautiful.

At the end of the day, everyone wants to feel good. If I can help to make that possible for a person, even temporarily, I am grateful because I am doing what I love – lending a hand up to my fellow humans. Seeing the difference in a person from the time they step into my treatment room to the time they leave when they are clear-headed, focused, relaxed, relieved, alert, aware, sleepy, euphoric, and peaceful…that is beyond a beautiful way to spend my day. I cherish it always.

What is beauty, to you?
